DIVERSITY AT NOLA SHRM

April is a multifaceted month, with the opportunity to embrace a tapestry of cultural celebration and important observances. This month, we recognize Arab-American Heritage Month and provide advocacy and education surrounding Autism Acceptance Month and Deaf History Month. Below you will find educational resources that can be shared within your organization and beyond this month:

To view: Browse the Smithsonian’s digital gallery, highlighting works of art, historical documents and trailblazers that have contributed to Arab-American history.

To eat: Try Lebanon's Cafe, a casual, mural-lined spot serving generous portions of Middle Eastern favorites like hummus & kebabs. (1500 S Carrollton Ave)

To serve: The Autism Society of Greater New Orleans (ASGNO) is hosting their annual Autism Festival on Saturday, April 20th from 11am – 3pm at the Westwego Farmers’ Market. The festival is a fundraiser to support services that empower and educate the New Orleans Autism community. Volunteers are needed and can email Executive Director Claire Tibbetts at info@asgno.org for more information.

To watch: “Deaf U” is a Netflix reality series that follows a group of Deaf and hard of hearing students at Gallaudet University; a private university in Washington, DC, as the only university in the world where students live and learn using American Sign Language and English.

To watch: “The Power of Silence” is a series on PBS that explores deafness and hearing loss through the many different lenses of education, understanding, compassion and technological advances.

Together, these collective observances provide platforms for learning and celebration of diversity within the workplace while underscoring the importance of unity, respect, and appreciation for our communities, and individuals of all abilities.
